"Greater Manchester Police claimed 53 people 'came clean' about bogus mobile crime reports during its month-long amnesty on false reporting in September this year.
Police claimed that this amounted to a saving of £16,000 in Police resources, based on an average investigation costing the police force £2,000.
The amnesty, called 'Operation hawk', was intended to publicise the huge drain on police resources from people looking to obtain crime reference numbers for
